Why Is Sakura "Trash?"
Why is Sakura “Trash”?
If you’re into anime I would be SHOCKED if you haven’t at least tried Naruto before.
I will admit that it took me several years to give it a chance. I use to think “oh man what a commitment.”
There is just SO MANY episodes and I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to give it a shot.
If you’re like me, then I’ve been there, so I can empathize. But trust me, you are seriously missing out.
Within just a few episodes I was totally hooked. The fight scenes are among the coolest I have ever seen, and the character development is unmatched.
And this is coming from a long time DBZ fan.
Honestly, I’m not even sure which one I like more at this point. DBZ will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ve probably watched it 10 times in my life. But objectively, Naruto might win out.
Among the amazing characters in Naruto there is one that gets made fun of more than anyone else. Possibly more than EVERY anime character ever (other than maybe Aqua from Konosuba).
That character is Sakura. The pinked haired Ninja healer, and one of the three main characters of the show.
If you’ve ever been on the “anime” side of the internet, you will find TONS of people trashing her for being… well… trash.
And they’re not totally wrong either. In a lot of ways I agree with them. Hell, I’ve even made comments about her in other anime groups and on friends posts, in order to get a laugh.
But here’s the thing. When people call her “trash” I don’t think its for the reasons you think.
Some people get offended by the person calling her trash, saying they’re just being a misogynist.
Basically, hating on her for being a woman.
And sure, there are definitely some people like that out there… but fuck those people. Who gives a shit what they have to say.
Personally, I don’t think that’s why calling her trash started. And it has very little to do with her skill as a ninja.
There are several times in the show when Sakura CLAPS the enemy. For instance, she took an Akatsuki member head on, without the help of Naruto or Sasuke.
Not only that, but she also saved Naruto multiple times. Here’s a refresher…
- She rescues him from Zabuza’s assassination
- She heals him after he goes Four tails mode and almost dies
- She heals him from the poison on the Kunai from Sasuke
- She saved Naruto and Sasuke when Shin got the drop on them
- She heals Obito long enough for him to keep the portal open to save Sasuke from death
This isn’t the whole list of this either. There is no short end to the amount that Sakura saved the day. And she is certainly a valuable member of the ninja team.
But there are Two reasons that I think is why Sakura gets so much heat…..
1. The way she treats Naruto
When watching Naruto for the first time you will most likely feel the way I (and most others) felt about Naruto.
He’s pretty darn annoying… for like.. a lot of the early episodes.
Don’t get me wrong it’s kind of cool to see him step up and be a badass little kid, but he’s just so damn annoying.
He’s loud and obnoxious. Super full of himself (with very little actual skill), and he is constantly hitting on Sakura.
This is done to show how hard of a life Naruto has had. He lost his parents when he was a baby, and essentially grew up with the whole village ignoring him.
All the other kids at school judged him, and he spent his entire childhood essentially alone. The only time he got any attention is when he was acting up.
So he would do annoying shit just to try and get ANY attention from his peers. Pretty sad right?
But this makes you appreciate him even more as the show goes on. He becomes the most respectable Ninja alive and saves the day countless times.
Not to mention his INCREDIBLE devotion to trying to save his “best friend”, Sasuke.
On top of this he has put himself in danger over and over again to save anyone he can. Including Sakura.
It is clear very early on that Naruto has a thing for her. But she’s obsessed with Sasuke, the “bad boy”. It’s really annoying at times. Because Sasuke treats her LIKE TOTAL SHIT for whole show. Literally even tries to kill her. More than once too.
And guess what? Naruto saves her AGAIN. Every time…
I think everyone who watched this show thought for SURE that Naruto and Sakura were going to get together. That she would have one of those “aha” moments realizing that the person who has actually been there for her through all the hardships was Naruto.
But no… she wanted the dude that is trying to kill her and all their friends.
So much so that is not even very believable. It’s not like Sasuke was “kind of good” or that he had been taken over by mind control against his will.
He was just a piece of shit. He wanted to burn the Ninja world to the ground and become a dictator.
Now its not quite as bad as I’m making it seem. Because there are certain circumstances that make it somewhat understandable… but not excusable. And Sasuke goes on to become an admirable man in the future.
But Sakura and Sasuke’s relationship is basically one you would see in a Netflix documentary about the girl who married Charles Manson (the serial killer).
And this, is what annoyed people. It’s not as if anyone thinks Sakura should be forced to be with the good guy. Of course she has her own choices and decisions (plus we learn that Hinata, Naruto’s future wife, is way more of a waifu anyway).
The issue is that the writer did a horrible job of explaining her devotion to Sasuke, after he tried multiple times to murder everyone. There was just no reason for her to be as attached to him as she was.
This coupled with Naruto’s feelings for her and how often he saved her, just didn’t add up in the viewers minds. And at this point in the show it was REALLY hard not to like Naruto.
He stood for everything good in the world. Every quality a Hero should have, he had. Plus he was strong as shit too.
2. She doesn’t compare to the other main characters
The other reason I would guess that she’s trash is a simple one. She just doesn’t SEEM strong enough.
And I don’t mean that she isn’t strong. She definitely is.
Like I mentioned there are plenty of times that she saved the day. And the force at which she can channel a chakra punch is almost unmatched by any other ninja.
But by the end of the show, Sasuke and Naruto are LEAGUES ahead of her in terms of fighting strength. It’s not even close.
Even though she can certainly take on some of the best, she seems incredibly weak in terms of overall battlefield knowledge.
It also doesn’t help that one of her biggest strengths is as a healer. Picture playing an MMO.
The healers are always underappreciated.
Everyone knows they are vital to the survival of the group, but for some reason most people just want to do the DPS. Because the best DPS gets all the glory.
Now personally I always like to heal. It makes me feel like I get to control who lives and who dies for pissing me off.
But nonetheless, the fighters always take the glory.
It’s kind of the same thing here. Naruto and Sasuke do all these crazy flashy moves that look AWESOME to watch. There is an easy way to compare their power against other ninjas.
And while Sakura has shown some serious feats of strength, it doesn’t compare visually.
So what do you think? Is Sakura really trash?
