Light The Shinigami? - Death Note Conspiracy Theory
Light the Shinigami? - Anime Death Note Conspiracy
Nothing gets me all amped up like a good conspiracy theory.
The other day I heard my favorite real life one. Its that “all birds are robots from the government to keep watch one everything we do.”
I know what you’re thinking…
This sounds CRAZY… but let me tell you, this guy was more convinced than I have ever been convinced about anything.
I mean, he got so into and had an answer for EVERYTHING.
- The technology is advanced, and the government hasn’t released it to the public
- They’re small and everywhere so they can easily spy
- “When have you ever seen a dead bird?”
The last one is my favorite. Because I have seen a dead bird, but I was like 3 years old so I couldn’t argue that specific point.
Anyway, just listening to this dude chat me up at the trash can near a Dunkin Donuts made my morning. He cornered me like a cheetah stalking a gazelle. But holy crap did I get excited at just listening to the nonsense. It was honestly a pleasant conversation aside from the lunacy, and I’m sure I made that guys day just by listening to him.
Here’s the thing. Often times “conspiracy theory” has a negative connotation to it. But that’s not always the case. There are some theories out there that years later happen to be true. For instance, back during prohibition it was often conspired that the government was poisoning alcohol to further discourage people from drinking it.
This was later proven to be true. While many manufacturers had been mixing harmful chemicals into alcohol for years previous, turns out government officials around this time were pushing manufacturers to “up the dose” of these chemicals, to stop bootleggers from turning alcohol into moonshine.
Anyway, I did some digging and found a fantastic anime conspiracy theory I wanted to share with you. And I’m genuinely curious, will you agree?
Death Note: Light the Shinigami?
Among us anime fans Death Note is considered one of the most iconic. The battle between the two masterminds Light and L is so entertaining to watch.
Never before have I sympathized so much with a “killer” than I did with Light.
So the theory here is what the title suggest. That after the events of Death Note, Light ends up in the Shinigami realm. And honestly, this one makes perfect sense. And here’s why.
There are a few events in the show that foreshadow to this being the case. Early on in the series Ryuk states something along the lines of “that a user of the death note does not go to heaven nor hell, but rather somewhere else”.
Now sure, this could mean some place not described to us. Like a “purgatory”. But it seems rather convenient that the only two realms shown to use in this world are earth and the Shinigami realm. Not to mention that the Shinigami realm, as far as we can understand, has existed forever.
Later in the show this idea is planted in our heads yet again. While Ryuk and light are traveling near the subway station, Ryuk is explaining to light how dire the state of the Shinigami realm is. Light is noticeably interested in this and says to Ryuk that perhaps the “Shinigami realm can also be fixed.”
Ryuk pretty much shuts this idea down because he knows where it is going. And then this idea is never mentioned again… or so we think.
The Cold Hard Proof
Remember the second opening? The black/and white creepy one with Light standing in the abyss?
Well, that’s not the abyss. That’s the Shinigami realm.
As Light stands there, the Death note is sitting in a puddle. This HAD to be done to specifically show us what will happen to Light. This is heaven nor hell, this is a place “somewhere else”.
Now here’s the big one. This to me is where it is obvious that Light becomes a Shinigami.
Death Note Relight is a movie film which re-tells the series, with some extra content we weren’t given in the show.
During this film there is a scene where Ryuk is speaking to a Shinigami. This takes place long after the events of Death note.
The other Shinigami is much more “human” looking than the rest of them. He even has the same hair color as Light.
Now if this isn’t enough, there is an obvious limp that this Shinigami walks with. On the same leg, and in the same manner as Light after he gets shot by Matsuda.
So now we have matching hair, human-like and same limp as Light in the show. Still not enough to convince you?
This unnamed Shinigami searches for Ryuk in their realm. He has a huge interest in the human world and heard Ryuk may know more about it.
When he approaches Ryuk he claims that he’s bored of the Shinigami realm and wants to go to the human world. He even mentions he has something to bribe Ryuk.
The Shinigami then tosses him an apple, in the exact manner that Light did in the series.
Ryuk then recalls the events from years ago of Light and the Deathnote. Mentioning that it’s something he will never forget.
His tone immediately changes as he thinks back. He starts to talk, seemingly directly towards the masked Shinigami. He says the words “you were never a god back then, you were just…”
And at this point the masked Shinigami has walked away. It is obvious that he was interested in Ryuk’s story, and is now on his own way back to earth with a Death Note.
The Close
As you can see a lot lines up here. Several times throughout the original series it was mentioned to us about the holder of the Death Note going “somewhere else”. Then shows Lights interest in fixing the Shinigami realm.
Then after that we see events years later of a Shinigami that looks like, walks like and acts just like Light, who has a HUGE interest in the earth realm.
Now of course this could all just be a coincidence… but what do you think? I’m convinced that this was Lights fate.
