Should I Watch Masamune-kuns Revenge?

 

 

 

You know that feeling you get when you watch an amazing rom-com anime?

 

You watch the characters grow and there are all these little bits and pieces of them falling in love.  Take ‘Toradora!’ For example…

 

That anime brought out all the feels.  Friendship, anger, love and laughter.  You get to see the two characters grow this incredibly close bond over time.  And by the end, EVERYONE was rooting for the two to be together.

 

Masamune-kun’s revenge is none of the above… well mostly.

 

Rather than the “happy feel good” vibe you would get for a standard rom-com, this anime is full of extra com and a lot less rom.

It follows Makabe Masamune, a high school boy who is obsessed with his looks. 

And I mean OBSESSED.

 

His bedroom is a full gym.  Treadmill, weights and other exercise equipment.  Why you may ask?

He use to be quite the chub ball as a kid. 

And we all know how mean kids can be to each other.  He got picked on quite a bit for his weight.  On top of that his parents were very rich, which made the other kids jealous.  So even more of a reason to pick on him.

 

But there was one little girl who didn’t. Aki Adagaki. She was snarky and cranky.  Your typical tsundere type.

However, the two definitely cared deeply for each other.

It was the first girl who gave him any attention and didn’t care about his weight.  To him, it was love at first sight.

Or so he thought…

When goes to bring her out and ask her flowers she rejects him.  Throws them on the ground and has her dog chase him away.

Masamune uses this pain to get in shape.  He becomes pretty jacked and is known as the “hot guy” around school.

 

In the first few scenes of the anime we see Masamune getting to school and seeing another popular kid asking a girl out.

Shes beautiful.  With blue hair and “great legs” (so he says).

And also quite the attitude.  She is known around school as the “cruel princess”.  The popular rich girl who shuts down every boy who asks her out, and embarrasses them in front of EVERYONE.

 

By now you probably guessed where this is going….

Its Aki Adagaki.  The same girl who rejected him in childhood.

 

And since she doesn’t recognize him (because he’s jacked now and changed his name) the plan for Masamune becomes clear.

 

Get Aki Adagaki to fall in love with him, and then smash her heart into a million pieces.

 

That is the entire plot of this anime.  And let me tell you, it is wildly funny.

 

Masamune tries so desperately to get this girl to fall in love with him, and more often than not, falls short.

But all the wild antics and “revenge” plans are hilarious to watch.  He even recruits her servant (she’s a rich girl remember) to help him with his plan.

 

If you’re looking to have a good laugh then you should definitely give this anime a try.  The comedy is spot on and the little hints of “love” will have you itching to see the end.

 

Now where the anime falls short is in its… shortness.

 

There was only 12 episodes to the anime and I doubt we will ever see a second season.  I don’t want to ruin the plot so I’m not going to say how things to turn out.  And honestly, there is a lot unsaid.

 

BUT the creator added an OVA that takes place in the future which shows some insight as to the results of everything. 

That along with a quick google search into the manga will explain all you need to know.

 

So if you’re bored and not looking for a 900 episode endeavor, I think you will be very happy with this anime.
